Fabolous-Soul Tape 3 Review

Soul Tape 3

On Christmas Fabolous released the third installment in his Soul Tape series. With the success of it’s predecessors, Soul Tape 3 maintains it’s soulful sound utilizing samples as the backdrop for lyrics that are sure to speak to the listeners spirit. The mixtape opens with the track “Everything Was The Same” featuring Stacy Barthe which of course is a play on Drake’s “Nothing Was The Same” album title. It samples “Paris Morton Music 2” off of Drake’s album  which is the second half of  the Jay-Z featured “Pound Cake” .  The track finds Fab reflecting on his earlier struggles in the industry with lyrics such as “That’s why I’m glad to be here, some of us never made it, it’s hard to get off the ground ya’ll think I just levitated, ya’ll think it was all love and nobody ever hated ya’ll think because I never state it I never been devastated”.

The Mark Henry produced “Sacrifices” is one of the standout tracks that once again finds a more reflective Fab speaking from the perspective of a hustler that is trying to break into the music industry, but at the same time has to do things that he is not proud of in order for him and his family to eat. The second verse of “Sacrifices” has Loso rapping from the perspective of a single mother that is receiving little to no help from the child’s father; “Pay a little child support but what’s so shady ’bout him too is in the club he pop Rose but won’t bring baby bottles through, I know things fell apart I ain’t say we gotta glue but if you walk around in Prada buy your baby Prada too”. The young Jeezy assisted “You Know” is reminiscent of “Real As It Gets” off of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 that finds Fab and Jeezy exchanging bars in the same manner that Jay and Jeezy did in ’09.

A song that is sure to get a few people talking is “The Get Back” that addresses Kendrick Lamar’s Control verse that shook up the Hip-Hop community. Fabolous states that it is not a diss, but more so an acknowledgment of the verse. With features from the likes of Jeremih, Jadakiss, Ryan Leslie and Mack Wilds who “The Wire” fans may remember as Mike, Soul Tape 3 will definitely remain in heavy rotation well into the new year.
